Craft Conversation with Red River Review Editors
Close Reading & Discussion: Carolyn Forché’s The Colonel
Join Red River Review editors for a close reading and listening session centered on Carolyn Forché’s The Colonel.
Together, we’ll listen to the poem, read it closely, and discuss how Forché uses image, point of view, and restraint to create tension and ethical force. We’ll also consider how the poem engages violence, history, power, and witness.
This is an informal, discussion-based session rather than a lecture. Participants are invited to listen, read closely, ask questions, and join the conversation.

Free Poetry Workshop
Online Poetry Workshop with Aaron Deutsch
Facilitated by Red River Review Associate Editor Aaron Deutsch, this free online poetry workshop invites writers into a focused space for sharing work in progress, reading closely, discussing craft, and receiving thoughtful feedback from other poets.
Participants will submit a poem in advance and come prepared to read and respond to the work of others. The workshop will center on close reading, participant feedback, and guided discussion of poems in progress.

Space: Limited to the first 10 poets who complete registration and submit work
Confirmed participants will receive the workshop access link and the submitted poems of the other participants by email in advance of the session.

Writing Class
Bearing Witness: Writing Our Self in the World
This class approaches the poem as an active site of memory: a place where our private lives meet the larger histories, communities, and conditions that shape them.
Red River Review’s inaugural writing class explores poetry as witness, remembrance, and living record. Facilitated by Editor-in-Chief Heather Robinson Hernandez, the class invites writers to consider how poems hold personal experience in relation to collective history, social memory, and the social realities we inherit and inhabit.
Through excerpts from Poetry of Witness, selected readings, guided discussion, and generative writing prompts, participants will examine how poets use image, voice, address, recollection, and ethical attention to bear witness to rupture, injustice, survival, and the human consequences of extremity.
Participants will generate new writing in response to memory, place, lived experience, and the histories we inherit, carry, question, and record.
